Alabama Driver’s Licenses
New residents to Tuscaloosa should obtain an Alabama driver’s license within 30 days of establishing residency. Those with a valid out-of-state license do not have to retake the test but do have to take the vision exam. Alabama driver’s licenses remain valid for four years. You can renew your driver’s license in person or by mail (for certain circumstances). Once you get it renewed in person you are given a temporary paper copy of your license while the hard copy is being mailed. Also, there is a 60-day grace period after your license expires that your license still remains valid allowing you a little flexibility if you forget to get it renewed by the expiration date. The cost of renewal is $23.50.
Renewing your driver’s license by mail requires that you already have a valid driver’s license with a photo ID and a signature that was obtained within the previous four years. Circumstances allowing renewal by mail include:
1- Military personnel/dependent of someone in the military
2- College students living away from home
3- Residents that are temporarily out of the state of Alabama for work

Car Tags & Registration
New Alabama residents must have his/her out-of-state registration transferred to Alabama. They must apply for an Alabama Certificate of Title and purchase an Alabama license plate within 30 days of establishing residency. New owners of vehicles have twenty days to obtain a license plate after the car purchase.
License plates must be renewed annually. The month that you are required to have your license renewed by is determined by the first initial of your last name.

Hunting & Fishing Licenses:
Citizens of Alabama between the ages of 16 and 65 must have a valid hunting license that must be renewed annually. Alabama residents may purchase a lifetime hunting license, which requires no renewal.
Citizens of Alabama between the ages of 16 and 64 must have a valid fishing license to fish with rod and reel/artificial bait and licenses must be renewed annually. Lifetime fishing licenses are also available for purchase that requires no annual renewal.

Business Licenses:
As a resident of Alabama you are required to obtain a business license if you engage in or carry on any business. Alabama State Business Licenses may be obtained at any of the Tuscaloosa County License Commissioner’s Offices. You might also be required to obtain a municipal business license if you plan to conduct business within the city limits of Tuscaloosa or Northport. These can be obtained at either the City of Tuscaloosa City Hall or the City of Northport City Hall.
