Getting Around Tuscaloosa
During the academic year (August – the beginning of May), The University of Alabama provides continuous campus transportation services when the University is open. During the summer months (May-July), the Transit System (Crimson Ride) provides campus service Monday-Friday from 7 AM – 7 PM. Please see our service information here. If you are arriving in Tuscaloosa by air, you will either be flying by private plane into Tuscaloosa or commercially into Birmingham. The Tuscaloosa Municipal Airport handles a lot of airfreight and private air traffic but does not offer commercial service. The closest commercial air service is located only 50 miles away at the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, with seven major airlines to choose from. Once in Tuscaloosa, there are several options for travel throughout the city including public bus systems, taxis and rental cars.
Bus Systems:
The Tuscaloosa County Transit Authority provides a scheduled, intercity bus passenger service, The Tuscaloosa Trolley, with four different inner-city routes daily. Routes include: V.A. Route, McKenzie Court Route, Holt Route and Greensboro Route. There are also two additional routes for campuses in Tuscaloosa, including The University of Alabama route and the Shelton State route. In addition to the regularly scheduled service, vans are available on a call in basis for certain citizens living within the city limits, including the elderly, handicapped, and citizens with physical and/or mental challenges. The trolley runs Monday-Friday from 5 AM to 6 PM but the 4 PM run is the last route that you can catch to transfer from one bus route to another at the main terminal. Fixed bus route fares are $1 for adults, $0.20 for children (free for age 3 and below), $0.50 for students K-12, $0.50 for elderly and handicapped, and free for UA students with a valid UA ID.

The Greyhound provides service to the city and charter buses are also available. Several taxis have fleets operating daily.

There is also a University of Alabama bus system called the Crimson Ride, which is available for all students, faculty, staff and visitors to campus. There are six bus routes throughout the campus with about 40 stop locations. The buses typically take about 10 minutes on the academic routes and 20 minutes on the perimeter routes. The Crimson Ride operates during the week and on game-days. Buses will also run during special campus events if requested. The weekday bus houses are 6:50 AM to 7 PM and the night hours are 7 PM- 10 PM. Weekend shuttle service on the University of Alabama’s campus are run by 348-Ride (7433) which is an on-demand, by-call service. The Crimson Ride also provides shuttle service to the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport for students, faculty and staff. Reservations are accepted online.

University of Alabama Car Sharing Services
Students and staff of the University of Alabama have two other options for local travel:
The Zimride is a campus ridesharing service. It is a fun and easy way to share the seats in your car or catch a ride. If you have a car, split costs by offering rides. If you don’t have a car, find rides where you need to go. The Zipcar is car sharing. Once approved, you can search for zipcars around campus and reserve one convenient to you for an allotted amount of time. You can have access to a zipcar for a few hours or even a full day. Once you are done with the zipcar you just return it to the same reserved parking spot. Gas and insurance are always free!

Traveling To/From Tuscaloosa:
Interstate 20/59 and 359 provide Tuscaloosa with quick connections to neighboring cities such as Birmingham, Atlanta and New Orleans. Highways 11, 43 and 82 and Alabama Highways 69, 13, 171, 76 and 215 keep Tuscaloosa County in close connection with the West Alabama and Northeast Mississippi region.
If you want to travel to nearby cities via train, the Tuscaloosa Amtrak Station is served by the passenger train, The Crescent. Amtrak provides ticketing and baggage services at the station, which is served by two trains daily.
